Family bus firm on a roll as it wins award

Everyone wants to be number one. Ross Prentice got to hear direct from his peers that he’s the top dog in his sector.

His family firm, Prentice Coaches, won the Top Independent Bus Operator title at the industry’s UK Bus Awards. “It’s an ego trip,” he admits.

It’s more than just a morale booster. It’s confirmation that Prentice Coaches is now the elite operator in a ferociously competitive trade. The company was founded a quarter of a century ago by Don Prentice.

He was joined by son Ross a year later. Today, Prentice Coaches runs a fleet of 20 buses and coaches in East Lothian, Scotland. The Prentices have invested in the latest technology, and ensured the handpicked driver team and staff are motivated to keep standards high.

The ambition now is to expand. “We’ve reached bursting point,” says Ross. All available land at the Haddington headquarters is in use, and the firm is desperate for space  to expand.

Ross is also making sure the third generation is ready to take over. “My son was standing beside me on the stage,” he says. “That was one of the most satisfying things about it.”
