Many rural businesses are struggling because of poor transport

Many rural businesses are struggling because of poor transport, and the wider British economy is suffering as a result, according to FSB’s report Going the Extra Mile: Connecting businesses and rural communities.

The research found half of small businesses believe the road network has declined in recent years, with only 10 per cent believing there has been
an improvement.

Problems include congestion, poorly maintained local roads, lack of planning and accountability, and poor public transport. Rural companies contribute 16 per cent of the value of the economy, but many feel this contribution is not reflected in infrastructure spending.
