Roundtable to discuss the reduction of single-use cups.

Event details

With the aim of reducing our consumption of single-use cups, from the end of 2025 the Scottish Government have proposed that anyone purchasing a drink using a single-use disposable cup will incur a minimum charge of 25p under the Circular Economy (Scotland) Bill, which was passed in June 2024.

In 2022, Legislation as introduced in the Scotland that placed a ban on many of the most damaging single-use plastic products including single-use cutlery, straws and food containers/cups made of expanded polystyrene.

Like back in 2022 FSB Scotland are holding a virtual round table session to hear from members and small businesses across Scotland on the key areas of the Bill.
• How do you anticipate the introduction of the 25p charge will impact your business? Do you think 25p is a reasonable charge?
• As part of the proposals, it is expected that businesses will have to record information on single-use cups. How do you think this would work in practice? • It is proposed that a proportion of the 25p charge will be retained by small businesses for administration purposes. Where/how would you like to see the remainder of the money generated from the charge spent?
• In what circumstances do you think exemptions to the charge should apply?
• It is proposed that the regulations will come into force at the end of 2025. What do you think is a reasonable period of time to roll out the delivery of the proposals?

The Scottish Government have set out their proposals in the consultation which will run until 14 November. Any members wishing to submit their own response can do so here.
