Liverpool author and campaigner leads project to tackle childhood inequalities

Liverpool-based FSB member Natalie Reeves Billing has stepped up to lead a project to provide every child with access to quality creative and educational resources.

As if being an award-winning children’s author, songwriter, social and mental health campaigner and mother didn’t keep her busy enough, Liverpool FSB member Natalie Reeves Billing has stepped up to lead a project to provide every child with access to quality creative and educational resources.

Split Perspectivz CIC’s Builder Book UK project was set up four years ago by Natalie and fellow Merseyside children’s author Jude Lennon. It provides educational material and events to local schools, children and their families. In September 2023 a new initiative, Planet Pack 24, was launched focusing on the United Nations Global Goals - a framework for a healthier world and better future for everyone.

The launch event was hosted by Liverpool legend, TV personality and well-known environmentalist Simon O’Brien, and the packs themselves have been produced following collaboration with communities across Liverpool City Region. They contain entertaining and educational resources and activities as well as a brand-new picture book written by Natalie and Jude.

“It’s so important that children are enabled to develop an enjoyment of reading and writing in their early, formative years. Giving them this positive start in life is vital to building health, happiness and prosperity,” said Natalie.

“Unfortunately, for many families, it comes down to a choice between heating their homes and putting food on the table or education - that’s not right, and that’s something we want to change.

“We want to encourage the community to come together to raise, encourage and support our young people, regardless of learning barriers or socio-economic factors, so that we can provide them with access to opportunities to learn and grow and create a kinder, fairer world through the medium of education.”

The packs will be delivered to over 10,000 economically disadvantaged households across Liverpool City Region and Deeside in March 2024. They also aim to also address concerning findings in the Annual Literacy Survey which show that the enjoyment of writing is at its lowest level since records began in 2010, and that writing significantly supports children’s well-being.
