Introduction of 20 mph speed limits across Wales

Local News 5 Sep 2023

Welsh Government are introducing a default 20mph speed limit on restricted roads across Wales from 17 September 2023.

This change is being made for safety and wellbeing reasons, and the Welsh Government will implement this reduction in the speed limit by working with highway authorities and Trunk Road Agents (TRAs) responsible for the strategic road network, and local authorities, who are responsible for county roads.

Restricted roads are usually located in residential and built-up areas where there are lots of people. They often have streetlights on them, placed no more than 200 yards apart.

Not all roads currently with a 30mph limit will be suitable to change to 20mph, Local Authorities will consider with local communities which roads should remain at 30mph and the speed limit signs in place will indicate these exceptions. A map on DataMapWales shows which roads will remain at 30mph.
