Member Conversations: Liz Turpin, Turpin Accounting Services: Free Bookkeeping Clinics in Hull

Local News 22 Mar 2024

One fine day in the charming market town of Beverley, East Yorkshire our Development Manager had an opportunity to catch-up with FSB member Liz Turpin.

Starting her accountancy company in her bedroom circa 12 years ago, Liz knows all too well what it’s like as a small business owner getting off the ground.   Turpin Accounting Services, now employs 6 people and continues to grow from strength to strength.

Appreciating the support that organisations such as the Business and Intellectual Property Centre (BIPC) in Hull has given Liz and her business over the years, add to that the fact that finance is the lifeblood of any business and that for many it can be quite a perplexing maze, especially when first starting out - Liz explained how she was keen to give back.

Liz makes a regular appearance at the BIPC in Hull Central library delivering free Bookkeeping Clinics.   These are 30-minute free sessions held on the 1st Wednesday of every month.    The clinics provide the opportunity for small business owners and startups to ask questions, in confidence, about finance, accounts, bookkeeping or business challenges.

There are also plans underway to look at a series of ‘what can I claim’ sessions for sole traders.

Liz highlighted the challenges that established businesses and their board members can also face in reading management accounts, assessing financial risk assessments, and investment.  Liz is currently working on a workshop on these topics to be held during Humber Business Week (1st week of June 2024).

You can book your free 30 minute session with Liz via the BIPC.

Liz was keen to also share all the other support that is available from the BIPC, and reminds us of the Makerspace facility, where you can make prototypes, design and they have a raft of machinery and resources to help you create your first product from clothing to engineered solutions.

The library also has business ideas clinics on a similar setup at various times during the day and early evenings via Zoom.
