Monthly Update: North East Scotland, August

Local News 1 Sep 2023

In August, the kids went back to school after the long summer break. It might’ve been quieter in the home-office, but there was still plenty going on in the small business world to keep me going. Here are the highlights:

Holiday in…  Aberdeen!

Before school re-started, my wee family spent a 5-day holiday in sunny (mostly) Aberdeen. Somewhere between The Barbie Movie and The Meg 2 (in 4DX 3D, no less), we managed to escape from an Enchanted Forest at The Locked Door Escape Games and check out the view from Aberdeen Art Gallery over the newly turfed Union Terrace Gardens. Having not spent this length of time in the city since we left in 2006, there was plenty to discover and rediscover within a short walk of the city centre.

World Cycling Championships in Tayside

After local members got in touch about disruption in North Perthshire and Angus due to the World Cycling Championships, I helped put businesses in touch with the organisers and created my own information page for those who were finding details hard to come by. Following the event, the organisers thanked me for helping to keep local businesses informed.

Staying in that part of the world, volunteer Area Leader for FSB, Euan Dear (Stag Gardening & Landscaping), went along to the Rural Perth & Kinross Community-led Local Development Local Action Group, or CLLD LAG for short. This was an introductory welcome meeting for new members held at the Madoch Centre, Glencarse. The food was excellent, reported Euan!

Shouting about FSB Members

You can hardly move on social media without bumping onto an FSB “Member Story”. Ten fantastic businesses in the North of Scotland took part in our promotional video extravaganza, telling us a bit about what they do and why they joined. Visit the FSB YouTube Channel to watch them all.

This was another great month to feature interesting people in my Small Business Focus articles in the Press and Journal.

  • As well as giving us an insight into her business, Susan Murray, of the Inverurie Wellness Centre, told us she likes “Wine and eating out, especially at Fennel Restaurant in Inverurie”. You’re not the only one, Susan!
  • I also featured Ben Laing, owner of Threaplands Garden Centre near Elgin. Ben completed his take-over of the business in August and loves to “disappear off with the dog into the hills” to help him relax.
Mugshot in the Media

Both highest-performing social media posts this month featured my massive head! I was on the STV News speaking about cashflow difficulties for accommodation providers due to delayed payments, and I maybe got a bit excited and sat too close to the camera.

On Twitter / X this time, a simple post about a Teams meeting at The Vinery in Banff had Microsoft (with their 13.3M followers) commenting on the beautiful walled garden backdrop! I’m not sure how I got onto their radar, but maybe it was Jenny Chisholm’s influence.

Thanks for taking the time to read my short review this month. Feel free to join us at any (or all) of our Virtual and In-person Networking events throughout September:
