Following the pandemic and the current cost of living crisis, small businesses are needing to work harder than ever to keep themselves on track and ensure that their business has a future.
There is a common culture emerging that everything can now be purchased online but people may be unaware of the impact this is having on our high street. Small businesses provide quality, unique products and services that we would miss if they weren’t available on our high street.
Based within local communities it is likely that they also employ people we know, whether this be family, friends or neighbours. Show your support using the tips below and make sure their hard work pays off and they remain a staple part of our lives.
Shop Local
This might sound simple but if you are not frequenting these local small businesses and purchasing products from them, then unfortunately they might not be there one day when you need them. Think about essential items that you purchase from larger retail stores that you could buy locally instead and make that swap - so next time you need a loaf of bread, can you visit a local bakery instead of the supermarket? Or if you need that new book, can you visit the local bookshop instead of online retailers?
Buy Gift Cards/Vouchers
Gift cards and vouchers give businesses confidence and security in that people are recommending their product/service to others and that they will visit them in the future. Whilst helping the business with short-term cash flow, this financial incentive will often get people out and visiting places they may not have done before as they can afford to a bit more because they have a voucher to use.
Mention them on Social Media
It takes just one second to follow a business on social media, which may not seem much to you, but it could make a small business’ day. Helping to promote a business increases their profile and therefore their customers and remember, visitors to your social media trust your endorsement and recommendation, so spread the word far and wide!
Write a Review/Testimonial
We are always quick to complain but we very rarely leave compliments so, if you have a positive experience with a company, make sure you share this! Most customers research a business before they think about visiting or purchasing from them so being proactive in sharing your praise can really mean the world to a small business.
Be Patient
Many small businesses can’t afford to employ a large workforce so will be operating on the same level in busy and quiet times. They want to ensure that all their customers get the same service so sometimes this may mean you aren’t served as quickly but please be patient as they really do value your custom.
