This article is intended to provide a snapshot and update our small business community on what support is available or coming up across the region and in your local area. From events and grants through to advice and network opportunities.

Charities and not for profit can benefit from energy assessments

The VCSE Energy Efficiency Scheme will help voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations across England to deliver more efficient services for people and communities by saving money on their energy bills. A £20M fund, managed and distributed by Groundwork, is running up to Mar 2025 and can support with Energy Assessments as well as funding for capital costs that will improve the energy efficiency.

Made Smarter – support for manufacturing

The team at Hull & East Riding Made Smarter team have put together a programme of workshops aimed specifically at the needs of the manufacturing sector.   These events are free but only open to manufacturers – we are keeping delegate numbers down to smaller numbers therefore allowing the workshops to provide a more practical session and opportunities to develop bespoke action plans to address your business’s needs.

Help to Grow: Management

A 12-week executive development course designed to support SME’s to help boost business performance and growth potential.  Designed for local business owners and senior leaders.

The course is 90% government funded so businesses only pay £750 for a 50-hour course delivered by highly experienced entrepreneurs and industry experts. With delivery as a mix of online webinars and face to face.   For the first time, eligible leaders can sign up for a cohort to be delivered in the Rotherham and Barnsley area, with sessions taking place at Wortley Hall.

Opportunity Goole

Based within Goole Library on Carlisle Street in the town centre, Opportunity Goole provides local people with access to information about Goole Town Deal and workforce development, helping local people to gain the knowledge and skills they need to secure employment and ensuring that employers can recruit local people with the skillset that they’re looking for. Opportunity Goole offers free support businesses/employers.  

Billed as a ‘one-stop shop’, it provides easy access to information about local job opportunities, training provision, business support and more to anyone over the age of 16 years, regardless of whether they’re employed, unemployed or retired.

Devolution – Have your Say.

The potential opportunities for transferring of powers and funding from national to local government, bringing significant amounts of investment opportunities to the area, and greater decision making and powers on housing, transport, infrastructure, skills and job creation.

Its really important we get a cross section of the business community contributing to the survey, which also provides insights to steer priorities.

Hull and East Yorkshire Devolution proposal consultation runs until the 27 Feb, with a series of in-person workshops also running around the area, dates and survey links are listed on the devolution page.

Greater Lincolnshire Devolution proposal opened in December and their consultation came to an end this week. However you can keep updated with progress through the Lincolnshire devolution pages.

Mayoral Elections in South Yorkshire – hustings hold the date.

With the pending elections in South Yorkshire for the Mayor of the South Yorkshire Combined Authority, the Federation of Small Businesses have teamed up with Chambers, CBI, and Make UK to host a hustings on the morning of the 19 Apr. A hustings is a chance to put questions to the mayoral candidates and hear their manifesto’s. Please hold the date, and we’ll send out further information as soon as the venue and agenda is confirmed.  

FSB Business Bootcamps

FSB Business Bootcamps are booking up and are being held in a variety of locations across the UK to deliver informative business talks to small businesses, each event having a particular theme. The whole day events will be broken down into bite sized talks from experts who will provide knowledge exchange and best practice ideas. The events will incorporate audience participation and sharing plus networking opportunities to enable everyone in the room to meet and swap details.

Our Doncaster Bootcamp ‘Future Readiness’, is also open for expressions of interest for a place at its mini-expo. £75 for FSB members email [email protected]. The bootcamp itself is free, but places must be reserved.

Hull Business Breakfast Bites  

FSB is working with Hull City Council and its managed workspaces across the City to put on a series of networking breakfasts. Join for ‘a melting pot of ideas, collaboration and community’ at this first event, on the 27 February, Craven Park Training and Enterprise Centre, 9am.  Please reserve your place. Yorkshire and Humber Virtual Networking

The dates continue on the third Thursday of the month for our popular virtual networking.  Taking feedback on board, the format will focus on pure networking but with a difference.  We are asking participants to introduce themselves from the offset – BUT just 30 seconds max.

Come prepared with your elevator pitch and allow more time to focus on getting to know each other at a deeper level in our breakout rooms.  When booking your place we are invite your suggestions on key topics and themes for the breakouts.  Last month our participants focused on goals, sharing their plans, seeking motivation and gaining tips as well as making new connections.
